Eighty percent of employers say that workers do not have the necessary soft skills.
Watch our video, "Why Soft Skills"
Take a look at the top three consequences of poor soft skills in the workplace and the classroom.
People lose their jobs over being late to work or not showing up at all. As teachers, you face discipline problems in your classroom and have students with low say/do ratios.
Top 3 Consequences of poor soft skills in the workplace:
- People involuntarily lose jobs because of tardiness and lack of absenteeism (a critical factor in EmployABILITY soft skills)
- Slowed production and increased costs
- Loss of clients
As teachers, you can see every day the effects of poor student soft skills in your classroom.
Top 3 Consequences of poor soft skills in the classroom:
- Discipline and attendance problems
- Loss of class instruction time
- Poor say/do ratio by students
It is not enough to teach soft skills. The key to changing student behavior, both in your classroom and as students enter the workforce is accountability.
One way to promote accountability is to have students sign a contract that clearly details what is expected for soft skill behavior.

|
At the beginning of the year clarify expectations in the contract with the students. The sample from the contract above details what is expected of students as they interact with others. The contract should clearly outline what is expected for each soft skill that you are teaching. Make the contract active by using “I will” to start off important behaviors you expect from your students. Review the contract with your students before they sign.
As students succeed, give acknowledgements such as; small rewards, tokens, or stickers (similar to what football players add to their helmets to show successes). You could create a wall of fame and highlight students as they do well. |

If a student fails to meet the terms of the contract, talk with the student. Explain the consequences of breaking the contract. Then create an action agreement, like the one below, for what will be done differently. Review the contract with your class before starting a new project or anytime that you feel students are not adhering to the requested behavior.
